Topic 7: MAiD & Mental Disorders

Exploring the main clinical practice considerations involved in MAiD for persons with mental disorders.

This topic module is for regulated clinicians and healthcare professionals who are directly involved in the coordination, assessment, or provision of MAiD.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the evolution of MAiD law concerning access to MAiD by persons with mental disorders.
  • Identify the main issues in applying the eligibility criteria and procedural safeguards to MAiD requests by persons with mental disorders either as a sole or comorbid condition.
  • Identify the challenges in assessing MAiD eligibility associated with specific mental disorders.
  • Apply the concepts discussed in the asynchronous module to clinical cases.
  • Exchange ideas with colleagues about how to handle the issues raised in these cases.

Eligibility/Who can take this course?
You are eligible to access this course if you are:

  • A registered physician or nurse practitioner – individuals who are legally allowed to assess or provide MAID 
  • A medical student, medical resident or nurse practitioner student
  • A health care professional who is directly involved in coordinating MAID care or a member of a designated MAID team within an organization. This may include MAID coordinators, registered nurses, social workers, clinical ethicists, etc., depending on the direct duties of their individual professional roles

This topic explores complex clinical scenarios and involves the direct participation of registrants in the facilitated discussion portion of the course. Registrants should feel that they can bring their clinical experience (directly or indirectly related to MAID) to the conversation. Prior experience with MAiD is strongly recommended.
