Topic 6: Navigating Complex Cases with Confidence

Exploring complex MAiD scenarios.

This topic module is for regulated clinicians and healthcare professionals who are directly involved in the coordination, assessment, or provision of MAiD.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare and contrast factors that make a MAiD case complex.
  • Identify factors that make a case logistically, clinically, and emotionally/interpersonally complex.
  • Identify and apply an approach(es) to navigating complex MAiD cases based on identification of the above factors.
  • Recognize professional, clinical, and program boundaries that may impact the management of complex MAiD cases. 
  • Identify the emotional aspects of complex cases and their impacts on clinicians.
  • Practice strategies to support clarity, reflection, and resilience in the midst of complexity.

Eligibility/Who can take this course?
You are eligible to access this course if you are:

  • A registered physician or nurse practitioner – individuals who are legally allowed to assess or provide MAID 
  • A medical student, medical resident or nurse practitioner student
  • A health care professional who is directly involved in coordinating MAID care or a member of a designated MAID team within an organization. This may include MAID coordinators, registered nurses, social workers, clinical ethicists, etc., depending on the direct duties of their individual professional roles

This topic explores complex clinical scenarios and involves the direct participation of registrants in the facilitated discussion portion of the course. Registrants should feel that they can bring their clinical experience (directly or indirectly related to MAiD) to the conversation. Prior experience with MAiD is strongly recommended.
