Topic 4: Assessing Capacity and Vulnerability

A deeper exploration of capacity considerations and psychosocial vulnerabilities in MAiD assessments.

This topic module is for regulated clinicians and healthcare professionals who are directly involved in the coordination, assessment, or provision of MAiD.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss strategies for navigating challenging capacity assessments.
  • Assess whether consent is truly voluntary and informed.
  • Identify how vulnerabilities are relevant to MAiD requests/assessments.
  • Reflect on and manage implicit bias.
  • Recognize societal discrimination in MAiD assessments.

Eligibility/Who can take this course?
You are eligible to access this course if you are:

  • A registered physician or nurse practitioner – individuals who are legally allowed to assess or provide MAID 
  • A medical student, medical resident or nurse practitioner student
  • A health care professional who is directly involved in coordinating MAID care or a member of a designated MAID team within an organization. This may include MAID coordinators, registered nurses, social workers, clinical ethicists, etc., depending on the direct duties of their individual professional roles

This topic explores complex clinical scenarios and includes registrants’ direct participation in the facilitated discussion portion of the course. Registrants should feel confident that they can contribute their clinical experience (directly or indirectly related to MAID) to the discussion. Prior experience with MAiD is strongly recommended.
