Topic 3: How to do a MAiD Assessment

A systematic approach outlining how to receive a MAiD request and prepare for and conduct a MAiD assessment. Particular emphasis is placed on the MAiD eligibility criteria and safeguards underlying all assessments, with a focus on assessor wellness.

This topic is for healthcare professionals, nursing and medical students, and individuals working in healthcare who provide direct patient care and are involved in the delivery of MAID.

Learning Objectives

  • Successfully prepare for and complete a MAiD assessment.
  • Discuss the eligibility criteria for MAiD.
  • Identify the differences in the assessment of patients whose natural death is and is not reasonably foreseeable.
  • Practice skills and identify strategies to bring one’s “best self” to MAiD assessments and address challenges that may arise in this deeply meaningful work

Eligibility/Who can take this course?
You are eligible to access this course if you are:

  • A regulated healthcare professional (such as a physician, nurse practitioner, medical resident, registered nurse, pharmacist, social worker, or psychologist)
  • A nursing student or medical student 
  • A healthcare team member supporting patients or healthcare systems — including care coordinators, spiritual care providers, clinical ethicists, speech-language pathologists, allied health professionals (e.g., physiotherapist, occupational therapist), health care administrators, or volunteer in the end of life space.
  • An Individual who works in healthcare or community organizations that provide or influence care of patients and are involved in the delivery of MAID

Direct experience assessing and providing MAID is not required for this course; however, experience working with individuals who have received may request MAID is recommended.
