Supporting Consistent, Evidence-Informed MAiD Practice Across Canada

One of the primary roles of the Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers (CAMAP) is to support the development and dissemination of clinical guidance on the assessment and provision of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).

CAMAP Guidance Documents are developed through a structured national process that brings together subject-matter experts and stakeholders to address complex or evolving areas of MAiD practice in Canada.

These documents are intended to support thoughtful, evidence-informed, and clinically relevant practice across diverse care settings and jurisdictions.

About the Process

Through the Guidance Document Framework, CAMAP:

  • Receives and reviews requests for new guidance document topics from members, stakeholders, and the MAiD community
  • Establishes Working Groups to support research, drafting, and collaborative review
  • Engages relevant stakeholders and experts through structured consultation processes
  • Supports the development of national guidance resources related to MAiD assessment, provision, coordination, and practice considerations
  • Maintains an ongoing review process to ensure guidance documents remain current and relevant

Guidance documents are developed collaboratively and undergo multiple stages of review prior to publication, including Working Group review, administrative review, governance review, and external stakeholder feedback.

Guidance Document Topics

Guidance documents may address topics such as:

  • Clinical and procedural considerations in MAiD practice
  • Legislative and regulatory developments
  • Ethical and communication considerations
  • Capacity and vulnerability assessments
  • Complex or emerging practice issues
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration and care coordination
  • Practice consistency and risk mitigation

Topics are prioritized based on factors such as national relevance, clinical impact, emerging needs, and identified gaps in existing guidance. Guidance document development is guided by CAMAP’s mission, organizational priorities, and identified needs within the MAiD community.

  • CAMAP members
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Stakeholders and partner organizations

All requests are reviewed through CAMAP’s Guidance Document Framework. Submission of a request does not guarantee approval for development.

What to Expect

Once a request is submitted:

  • The request is reviewed by the Board’s Membership & Education Committee (MEC).
  • A recommendation is prepared for Board consideration.
  • The Board determines whether the request will proceed, be deferred, or be declined.
  • For approved projects, a Working Group is established to support development of the guidance document.
  • Draft guidance documents undergo internal review and external stakeholder consultation prior to publication.

Requestors are informed of the outcome following Board review and decision.

Working Groups and Stakeholder Participation

Guidance documents are developed through Working Groups composed of individuals with relevant expertise and experience.

Depending on the topic, CAMAP may also seek input from:

  • Regulatory bodies
  • Healthcare organizations
  • Academic contributors
  • Professional associations
  • Community and stakeholder groups

Stakeholder feedback plays an important role in strengthening the quality, clarity, and relevance of published guidance documents.

CAMAP Guidance Documents are intended to:

  • Support safe, thoughtful, and consistent MAiD practice
  • Reflect current Canadian legislation and practice considerations

Guidance documents are reviewed periodically and may be updated, revised, or retired as practice environments and legislation evolve.
