Topic 3: How to do a MAiD Assessment

A systematic approach outlining how to receive a MAiD request and prepare for and conduct a MAiD assessment. Particular emphasis is placed on the MAiD eligibility criteria and safeguards underlying all assessments, with a focus on assessor wellness.

Estimated Length: 2-hour online pre-learning + 3-hour facilitated session
Education Credits: 5 credits for CFPC, 5 hours Self-Assessment for RCPSC, 5 CNA accredited hours for nurses

The Canadian MAiD Curriculum (CMC) is the first nationally accredited, comprehensive, bilingual educational program to support the practice of MAiD in Canada.

Jane Henderson, MD, FRCPC

British Columbia

Jane Henderson is a Dalhousie graduate who completed a residency in anesthesia and then a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia in Ottawa. She has worked in Montreal, Halifax and Victoria, serving as an Associate Professor with McGill University and then Dalhousie University. Her busy MAiD practice began in 2018, and she lives in Victoria and works with Vancouver Island Health as a MAiD assessor and provider. She is an active member of CAMAP, served on the monthly case-sharing committee and teaches the MAiD curriculum. Jane is presently a member of the Clinical Practice Committee for MAiDHouse in Victoria.

Damian Rzeznikiewiz, MD, CCFP

Ontario

Dr. Damian Rzeznikiewiz is a Toronto-based family physician who has been helping patients and their loved ones with MAID needs since 2017. As a Director at MAiDHouse and as a CAMAP faculty member, Damian mentors healthcare providers including physicians, nurse practitioners, and social workers, as part of an effort to build MAID-related capacities that better serve our communities. At the core of his clinical and teaching philosophy, he focuses on actively listening, communicating effectively, and practicing cultural humility, recognizing and respecting the diverse backgrounds and perspectives that are so intrinsically fundamental to patient care.

Sujet 3 : Évaluation de l’AMM

Démarche systématique décrivant comment recevoir, se préparer à évaluer, puis évaluer une demande d’AMM. Une attention particulière est accordée aux critères d’admissibilité à l’AMM et aux mesures de sauvegardes inhérentes à toutes les évaluations. La question du bien-être des évaluateurs et évaluatrices est mise à l’avant-plan.

Jane Henderson est diplômée de l’Université Dalhousie. Elle a complété une résidence en anesthésie, suivie d’un fellowship en anesthésie pédiatrique à Ottawa. Elle a travaillé à Montréal, Halifax et Victoria, occupant des postes de professeure agrégée à l’Université McGill puis à l’Université Dalhousie. Elle mène une pratique active en AMM depuis 2018. Résidant à Victoria, elle travaille avec Island Health à titre d’évaluatrice et de fournisseuse de l’AMM. Elle est membre active de ACEPA, a siégé au comité de partage de cas mensuel et enseigne le Curriculum sur l’AMM. Elle est actuellement membre du comité de pratique clinique de MAiDHouse à Victoria.

Damian Rzeznikiewiz, MD, CCFP

Ontario

Le Dr Damian Rzeznikiewiz est médecin de famille à Toronto. Depuis 2017, il accompagne les patients et leurs proches dans le cadre de l’AMM. Administrateur de MAiDHouse et membre du corps professoral de l’ACEPA, il agit comme mentor auprès des professionnels de la santé — médecins, infirmières praticiennes et travailleurs sociaux — afin de renforcer les capacités des communautés en lien avec l’AMM. Sa pratique clinique et son approche pédagogique reposent sur l’écoute active, la communication efficace et l’humilité culturelle.
